The deadline is approaching to comment on new rules proposed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). These rules will impact how fresh fruit and vegetables are grown and processed in the U.S.

The FDA is accepting comments on the rules, part of the Food Safety Modernization Act, through Nov. 15.

The rules, as written, “will unfairly burden family farmers, target sustainable and organic farming and reduce the availability of fresh, local food in our communities,” writes the National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition.

National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition, Farm Aid and other organizations such as Center for Urban Education about Sustainable Agriculture are joining together in a call to action to get signatures for petitions that will ask the FDA to change the proposed rules so they do not put safe farms out of business; harm farmers’ soil, water and wildlife conservation efforts; or shut down the growth of local and regional healthy food systems.
