Sustainable Otsego

Otsego 2000

Sign this petition to tell the Obama administration to enact an immediate national moratorium on high-volume, horizontal hydraulic fracturing (HVHF) while the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and independent scientific studies are completed on the impacts of fracking to the environment, climate and human health.

Signing this petition automatically sends an email calling for a moratorium on fracking to the U.S. EPA, Department of Energy and Bureau of Land Management.

This petition unites the voices of Americans who demand a moratorium on fracking until the risks to water and air quality, climate and human health can be be thoroughly evaluated, successfully mitigated or eliminated, or until it is determined that HVHF technology cannot be performed without unacceptable risk and is banned.

I WANT OBAMA TO ENACT AN IMMEDIATE MORATORIUM ON FRACKING THAT:

  • I think President Obama does not understand the depth of the problems associated with hydrofracking, or the breadth of the opposition to it. It is so dangerous in so many ways – Not only will it poison fresh water just when the need for it is becoming even more vital as global warming increases, but it will actually accelerate global warming. It may burn cleaner than coal, but the whole process of obtaining and shipping it leaves a larger carbon footprint than coal does. Additionally, various parts of the process will poison our air and land, and cause horrifying health problems on a broad scale. If it were as the gas companies would have us believe, it would be great. But it’s not, and it poses terrible dangers, not just for the areas where fracking is done, but also for the planet as a whole.

    • Jono Ruf says:

I disagree and think O fully understands the implications behind fracking, which makes it that much more troublesome!

      • Jacquelyn Storm says:

I completely agree..he’s too smart not to know exactly what’s going on. Special interests are in control.

        • Kenneth Gibson says:

It is not a question of how smart he is, or isn’t. I think the job spreads a person very thin. In my opinion, Obama’s failure is in the selection and retention of advisors. The economic advisors he has allowed or caused to leave him and the ones he has kept (even a holdover from the Bush Administration at Treasury) indicate his failure in that area.

Building the infrastructure for a renewable energy system would have been the stimulus the economy needed begining three or four years ago. Now it is important to signal to the world that the U.S. really is commited to wind and solar generation and electric powered transport by turning off the oil and gas taps and putting an end to federal support of nuclear power.

Like most politicians, Obama is trained as a lawyer, not an economist. The energy “establishment” only knows the old ways. It is time for academia to start producing research that fills the voids around fracking, tar sands and spent nuclear fuel storage. The world needs a definitive explanation of how hazardous these things really are – for all our sakes.

          • Charlie Law says:

Good Call, KG.: “spread a person thin.” I have the luxury of reading/listening to investigative journalists, Chomsky, Wolff, Hedges, Alternative Radio (AR)speakers, etc. for 2 hrs/day. O’Bama, and for that matter, nearly all congressmen and mainstream “journalists” reporters don’t have that time, craft their language, and still make deadlines. I see the weekend gabfests by say, Gregory, that are completely unable to call out misstatements, outright lies because, I think, they just don’t know where to look, what to look for, and how to use their limited time usefully. They don’t even know the right questions. BUT, well taken: these guys/gals + O’B should avail themselves of advisors that are up to date. And, to me, that’s the ugly face of the oligarchy. Our only real resource is to SOMEHOW FORCE the MSM evening “news” (80% of the low-info public’s source) to take responsibility for saving our democracy/planet. Maybe after the impeachment when 20 million are in the streets.

          • Lindsay Groves says:

He’s a compromiser, which in this case is a bad thing.

        • Christina (Chris) DeLaigle says:

I believe President Obama is too smart NOT to know all about fracking and its heinous probabilities for our future, but he’s between a rock and a hard place and having to pick his battles. I hope he chooses correctly and outlaws fracking AND the Keystone XL Pipeline. This country MUST use cleaner alternatives to fossil fuels like windmills and solar panels. The oil companies just haven’t found a wedge to get into the profits of these alternatives so they can corner the market and manipulate the prices
like they have on their products

      • Julia Brown says:

Agree. Obama’s imprimatur (approval) of fracking is unconscionable, and a betrayal of his electorate, the US populace now and future, and world ecology.

        • Joy Ramsey says:

I agree with Julia. If this was a priority of the President, he would get involved. He has turned his back on the environment at a crucial time. He is in his last 4 years, step out and be bold, LEAD. Our environment is at stake. He is failing our earth.

    • Geoff Wright says:

I believe you are right Katherine. If something sounds too good to be true it usually is. The process sounds so exciting and yet is so fatally flawed no matter what way it is looked at once one looks ever so slightly below the surface. I continue to be amazed how well industry propaganda works driving some to want to believe so badly that they move their minds into an altered state where the prospect of poisoning their neighbors and even their own children isn’t all that bad so long as they get the money. The shale gas drilling industry and their politicians are just plain greedy but some of their most ardent supporters are simply desperate and can’t give up on the illusion that they will one day be millionaires.

  • Mary E. Langendorfer says:

I live in one of the poorest counties of New York State, but we do have beautiful lakes, lovely wooded hills, clean air and aquifers of pure water. There are many in the state who would like to cash in on the “fracking” of natural gas, looking for a boom in employment and easy money for the landowners, businesses and governments. The sad fact is that after taking the gas and poisoning our air, soil and water, the gas companies pull out, leaving a wasteland. Can money ever bring back good abundant water, arable land, healthy children? How can anyone with a conscience vote to allow fracking in this or any other state?

  • Paul Purcell says:

The gas industry is now putting restrictions on the information doctors get and can release.

Fossil fuel subsidies are numerous and complex. The average informed citizen does not have a clue how these dirty industries get preferential treatment above clean renewable energies such as wind, solar, wave and biofuel. Included in this article is a link to a report outlining the business tactic the fossil fuel industry employs to entrench and hide their far too generous subsidies. Clean renewable energy projects do not get anywhere near the support these dirty energy projects do. We need to be supporting our clean energy efforts!

    • THE HIDDEN FACTS…& FRAUD OF THE PETROLEUM INDUSTRY

The USA Currently produces more petroleum than we use… Regardless what the media and our Politicians say… YES… True… In January of 2011 The Wall Street Journal declared “Our Countries Energy Independence.!” Since January 2011…. we have been producing more oil than we use! THE USA is a MAJOR EXPORTER OF OIL! So then” Why….for almost two years the Prices continue to go up…?

What is going on today is that the Oil Companies continue to cover-up that important fact! They continue a narrative of Lies in broadcast media To continue to demand and push that we need even more production and more drilling to reach the Energy Independence threshold & Drill Baby Drill !!!! This was openly used in the last election by both parties was Clearly a Lie! A lies used to COVER UP the massive profits, FRAUD and exploitation of our country’s natural resources. As domestic oil were fraudulently manipulated and consumer prices continued to rise!!!

The Petroleum Industry today is involved in a Scheme to “OVER INFLATE” the Price of Domestic Oil and “UNDER INFLATE” the “Quantity of Domestic Production”! Because of their scheme That STEALS Our Countries Domestic oil and then ships that oil to China and India. Why? Well This does three things… (1) Drives up the Prices on the U.S. Domestic Market because of a “Falsely Created Shortage” ~ That shortage is a direct result… of Shipping our Countries EXPORTED out of our Country. (2) That Domestic Oil Exported to China & India then has to be REPLACED by the Oil Companies more expensive IMPORTED OIL from the middle east… Using that Oil to to drive up the Cost to the Americans on the Domestic Market.

      This is a Ponzi Scheme!!!!

Every man women & child in the United States and in North America are being raped by the Petroleum Industry. Our Countries Domestic Resources are being STOLEN and shipped over-seas (3) Then this Ponzi Scheme with the help or our corrupted elected officials continues to lie to the people… telling the U.S. Citizens we still need to be Energy Independent and, we need to “Drill baby Drill !!!! When in fact the truth is that every U.S. Citizen is being ROBBED!!! The Petroleum Industry continues to escalate the LIE by expanded production and expanding the destruction of our environment, and our damaging our health as they STEAL OUR NATURAL RESOURCES… This is Theft… this is Fraud… and this is a Crime that has corrupted our elected officials and also our election process.

Today “WE”… the US Consumers… are paying with our children’s future for those Huge Corporate Profits and the rape of our Natural Resources… If that wasn’t bad enough… These same Corrupt Tax Dodging Petroleum Corporations now hide their profits over-seas to avoiding U.S. Taxes and U.S. Environmental Laws…

These Oil Companies are destroying our country as they continue to suck the life blood from our economy and the dollars from the pockets of every citizen… driving our country of a financial cliff.

This Scheme Privatizes “THE CITIZENS” Natural Resources ~ This is a “Ponzi Scheme” that is destroying our Oceans, our Land our Air and, Fresh Water without any concern for our future or our Ecology. The Petroleum Industries only concern IS PROFIT! ~ THEIR POLICY IS A LIE and is Designed to Deceive the American people !! By perpetrating these lies on the American Public, they are in fact… committing fraud against all of the American People. They are destroying the fabric of our Country for their own personal Corporate Profit as they escalate the destruction and the further plunder of all of our countries Natural Resources. Stealing and selling OUR DOMESTIC RESOURCES TO CHINA & INDIA . then…Leaving the our country’s citizens robbed of their Future, health and their economy devastated and our environment polluted and destroyed.

The perpetrators of this Ponzi Scheme along with the politicians who accepted money and allowing the ongoing Rape Pillage & Plunder practices to continue… All need to be arrested and brought to Justice!

I believe we’ve been getting raped by oil companies, in a variety of ways, for a couple decades!
The worst is fracking which permanently destroys land, uses too much water, pollutes the land and the water, and put all life in the area at risk. Why should America give up it’s natural resources for the profits of the few?!*
Unconscionable. Intolerable. And extremely unwise in the face of already occurring drought in the west and probable global warming.

      • Shirley Roberts says:

This is SO true. Our county is being overrun by frac sand miners. ruining our
beautiful hills and polluting our trout streams. Don’t vacation in Wisconsin
anymore unless you like sand. It is the most disgusting display of greed we have
ever seen. Town and County official are being corrupted by the money and false
promises of these oil companies. One sand company is going bankrupt and is also in
Federal Court -prosecuted at the request of Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. Violated all the rules that have been obeyed by a legitimate mine in the
next county. Will there be violence? Could be bad.

      • Tracysc32@gmail.com says:

        Great comment!

      • Joy Ramsey says:

Gerard: I agree 100%. Why do we risk pollution locally to produce oil to send to China? The payoff to politicians is obvious. The potential to the poor average American who thinks fracking will make him/her rich is equally appealing.

This scares the hell out of me. Yet, I feel like I’m crying “the sky is falling” over and over, and others think I’m “over-the-top” in my protest.

I don’t want there to be an obvious spill, health problems, or water contamination to SHOW what we are dealing with now, without much protection. The politicians have had the upper hand in getting their message out. We’ve got to do a better job.

        • Lindsay Groves says:

I was in China last spring, and they are dying. The old people- everybody has a chronic cough, You can hardly see across the street, unless it has rained in the past half hour. I thought, oh, it’s government corruption, at the time, but I realize now that it isn’t a local problem, it’s global. Corporations are killing us, slowly in most cases. They or their representatives and beneficiaries are buying up news media, so we won’t even be reading , hearing, or watching news about this in the near future. Pennsylvania looks just as corrupt as China, and NY is headed that way. (We won’t even get started on Texas) We need some journalistic and political leadership. If China consumes our natural gas, the environment here is degraded, and they get the “cleaner” fuel, and they do have the money to pay for it. The economic power in China is unimaginable. The amount of construction, the profits that can be derived from millions of people deciding to move into the cities for jobs, the complete lack of regulation of industry, and complete disregard for public health, the ability to bribe your way into any position, all spell trouble for the rest of the world, which is slower, less innovative, less aggressive, than China. I am guessing that China has already realized what it’s air quality means for the ability of its workforce to show up and work, and that they mean to fix it, by switching to fuel that mostly leaves its pollution at the extraction site. That would be our neighbohoods. They can afford this. It’s legal.

  • Ernest Guindon says:

I think there is an even deeper evil behind fracking, which underscores the importance of people working to develop cleaner energy sources and to save their homes, their health, their lives, the integrity of a vitalized environmental life habitat for all natural living beings of Earth. The evil is the stated objective of a minority of sick-minded greed-dominated super wealthy to eliminate 90 per cent of the world’s population by 2050. How they intend to achieve that is to make our lives unliveable through wars and pestilence and control of food, etc. Kissinger put in writing in 1974 that the priority policy objective of the U.S. toward what he termed “third world nations” is depopulation. Kissinger is a dual citizen Israel-U.S. What right does an Israeli citizen have to be setting U.S. policy. I don’t want to sound sectarian, but in objective terms, if one googles “dual citizen Israel/U.S. policy positions U.S. government” or words to that effect, one finds a mind-boggling list of international war criminals, all the way into the Policy Board of the Pentagon Department of Defense. Thus the pressure to go to war against Israel’s “enemies” in the mideast, including Iraq, at U.S. expense. And the military is the planet’s worst agent of pollution, particularly through the process of war, perhaps the planet’s most lowly form of organized human activity. Of course, in the U.S. we have the massive tons of steel machines of destruction, destroying in minutes what took thousands of years for Nature to create, eating away at America, doing damage which lasts forever. The pipeline must NOT be allowed for the same reasons fracking must be stopped. Those are NOT designed for the well-being of humanity. They are NOT. Of course I realize the person who developed the fracking technique thought he was contributing to the science of gas extraction and didn’t know of the problems it would cause. The pipeline I am willing to attribute to more sinister global intentions which are to the detriment of America. A partial future solution to some of this, after laws get straightened out, is to plant thousands of square miles of hemp, which is reported to be able to recycle oxygen and CO2 twice as much as trees, its seeds provide a virtual whole food, it can be used in many well documented ways, supporting healthy lifestyles.

    • Sam and Dori Orenstein says:

It is interesting that you Anti-Semites come out of the walls when any
situation detrimental to people and the environment is discussed. Fracking in our
United States is a big oil threat and has nothing to do with Israel.

    • Tracysc32@gmail.com says:

Do you think Monsonto will try to get ownership of that seed too?

  • K Roberts says:

There is another issue here that those of us who oppose fracking also must get involved with, because they are absolutely related , and banning hydrofracking and limiting the fossil fuel industry won’t happen without our getting the completely misnamed “Citizens United” amendment overturned. This is the amendment to the constitution a few years ago that allows- gives the RIGHT- to businesses and entire industries to contribute as much money as they want, to any politician’s campaign coffers. It is why the fossil fuel industry is being allowed to buy our politicians’ votes and opinions…. until that is overturned, this situation will continue. For more information, and to sign pledges and such, go the Public Citizen website.

How much damage needs to be done before this administration gets it’s head out of the sand and seriously considers the science that says we are going to kill the human race if we don’t stop this lunacy. America unite against fracking!

Remember the promise Obama made in his 2008 campaign?
“And I’ll invest $150 billion over the next decade in affordable, renewable sources of energy — wind power, and solar power, and the next generation of biofuels — an investment that will lead to new industries and 5 million new jobs that pay well and can’t be outsourced.”
We must not allow them to keep fracking our country. It is happening where ever they drill, their toxic chemicals are entering our soil, air and water. Here in PA our governor has GIVEN AWAY our state to the gas industry. We are being fracked to death.

This is above the president’s level – it is global.

I have been poisoned by Methane/Natural Gas Toxicity and live in HELL every day. Anyone who supports Fracking should be FORCED to live on the contaminated land from Fracking, drink, cook and bathe with the TOXIC water, eat their food grown on the TOXIC land and eat the animals, eggs, milk, grown on the TOXIC land, then put them in a room and slowly leak Methane Gas into that room for them to breathe, THEN ask them if they think Fracking is Toxic to people, animals and the environment.

    • Joy Ramsey says:

  • All we can do at the grassroots is to wake up every day to resist fracking in small and large ways, doing whatever is in our power to do. We cannot be so worried about the President, even though everyone who can should get to D.C. on February 17 for the climate action rally at the White House. I have goat babies to bring into this world, and so I work for their survival and their clean water and air by constantly educating my neighbors about fracking. One way I do that is with this online PowerPoint: http://www.authorstream.com/Presentation/StephenCleghorn-1652270-the-case-for-moratorium-50-min-clickable-v4/

  • Robyn Lauster says:

We should follow the Precautionary Principle. Why do you think hydraulic fracturing was given a pass on air and water quality? They KNEW it would be an expensive problem. The oil/gas industry is working as fast as it can before citizens can put regulation in place. Our Congress is owned by these corporations, so our hands are tied. Ruin the air and water and what do we have? Cheap gas. Not a trade any sane person would make.

  • Dave Kisor says:

Those on the Big Island of Hawai’i empathize with you, as we are opposing dirty geothermal (as opposed to clean steam) and an immanant threat of fracking. Our feral gooberment paid Ormat, an Isreali corporation to produce “clean & green” power. I suggest you read Thorstein Veblen’s “The Theory of the Leisure Class” to understand the mentality of those doing this to us, because they don’t think like us at all. Their methods are chicanery and fraud and they will lie, cheat and steal until they get what they want. You hear of the 1%, but the real levers of power are pulled by the .01%.

  • Daniel Twomey says:

The underlying problem is the unholy alliance between corporations and our government, in this case gas companies and federal and state government, and their agencies. Fracking must be stopped and underlying cause must exposed. Don’t expect this unholy alliance to stop with fracking. There are others resources and rights they will exploit unless we, the people, stop them. Our democracy is at risk internally. This is greater threat that external risks.

  • Anita Schmitz says:

We live in a “corporatocracy,” not a democratic republic, or democracy. It’s that simple. Since “they” own the media & the government all we really have is numbers…we are the 98%. Of course so many right wing people buy into what they are told by the media (and too often their preachers) our 98% isn’t quite 98% anymore. Scary!

We need to support the people who are fighting for the fracking bans in their cities, county’s and states, we need to force our government to embrace “home rule”. Only as a united front will the masses lead so that the leaders will follow. Let’s hope that saying proves to “hold water!”

Greed is not, never was, and never will be Good!!!

  • Susan says:

I have been shocked by the support given to the fracking interests in Illinois by two big environmental organizations…The Sierra Club and The Natioal Resources Defense Council. Both were “at the table” we are told, when HB 2615, the so- called fracking regulation bill was written. In reality, it is a roadmap for the energy companies to open up Illinois for fracking…taking away local zoning control, for example, from county boards and allowing “forced pooling” of adjacent landowners who do not want to permit fracking on their property once 51% of land in an area is under fracking contract. Anyone who knows how much Illinois farmland is in the hands of industry, absentee landowners, and trusts recognizes that contracting 51% of acreage ( not 51% of actual people owners) would be relatively easy to control.
With ” big enviro” apparently more interested in having a seat at the table of power than protecting the water, air, land, and people, it is going to take heroic efforts by local, grassroots organizations to stop this environmental disaster.

    • Anne Caruso says:

The Sierra Club in Illinois did not follow the usual measures used by the SC to endorse bills, etc. They didn’t research enough and were duped. They made a big mistake. They know this and probably regret it deeply.

We must urge President Obama to put a moratorium on fracking. When our state universities say they want to allow fracking on public lands so they can do research on the fracking process, what they really mean is they want the money from the oil and gas produced by this destructive process. Anyone can see the mass destruction that has happened to states where fracking is rampant.Contaminated water, air and soil.
When every drop of oil and molecule of gas is depleted from the shale, what do we have then: a lifeless rock!
    STOP THIS CARNAGE NOW!

Isn’t it a stupid idea to dredge up highly toxic crap from its place deep in the earth, where it belongs and should stay, and spread it around in our environment? Especially when there are so many clean alternatives. Further, it is a travesty that all government oversight panels are stacked with industry shills, guaranteeing that a factual, impartial decision will not be forthcoming. It is difficult to comprehend why these industry apologists do not think of their own progeny, if not themselves, who will have to live in the pollution they have and continue to produce through their advocacy. If money is the motivation, we can’t buy back a clean environment with any amount of it, and our progeny will curse us for our greed and stupidity, and our lack of concern for future generations.

We have got to get the big media to start talking and investigating all this.. people all over the states are dealing with this. there are a lot of people that are unaware of the severity.. if it isn’t in their back yard yet, it will be soon.. every living thing is in peril..Us, our children, the water, the land, the animals.. everything.. the hills will be gone, the water will be gone, the animals gone, and eventually, we will be gone.. please, write to the media and push them to start reporting all this.. CNN< MBCCBS> They need to start talking so everyone finds out what is going on all over the U.S.

    • Joy Ramsey says:

Jayne, I agree we need to get the word out. Our right-leaning county newspaper definitely favored the view of the frackers and their bought politicians. So many people in my area of Williamson Cty., Illinois, don’t know what fracking is. If it isn’t happening on their land, their attitude is why should I think about it. Well, it is their water too.

Education is vital right now. We can’t depend on Pres. Obama or local politicians. They have sold us out.

  • Catherine says:

Some of the chemicals that are used in fracking, are the same as the ones found at Love Canal. Enough said. For a full list of chemicals used in fracking visit the Congressional report: http://democrats.energycommerce.house.gov/sites/default/files/documents/Hydraulic-Fracturing-Chemicals-2011-4-18.pdf

I am in full agreement with the above responses. We, here in the Appalachians of Virginia are stollen from, gutted and rapped. Our natural gas has been taken and sanctioned by the VA legislators. Our county leaders, even the judges are on the payrole of gas industry.
Myself and a handful of committed citizens have brought a federal class action law suit against two large gas companies, the VA Governor, and the VA Attorney General, for assisting in “taking” what belongs to the surface owners.
I have attended the monthly VA Gas and Oil Board meetings for six years, put into place by said VA Governor and Attorney General and in my lifetime have never witnessed such blatant disregard for humans, animals, air, land and fresh water.
We’re stewards if what mother nature has provided and must guard and protect it. Our very lives depend on it.
